Septic Care

Septic Systems: Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind
Many homes in the Torch Lake Watershed rely on septic systems, but because they’re underground, it’s easy to forget they’re there. A little routine maintenance can go a long way toward protecting your home, your drinking water, and the lake we all enjoy.
Why it matters
A septic system is designed to treat wastewater, but it can’t remove nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen or toxic chemicals. If a system isn’t maintained, those pollutants can move through our sandy soils into groundwater, which eventually feeds Torch Lake through cold-water springs. Even small increases in nutrients can encourage algae growth and affect the lake’s exceptional water quality.
The best thing you can do
Pump and inspect your septic system every three years. Regular pumping helps prevent solids from reaching your drainfield, where they can lead to costly repairs or even complete system failure. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your system working properly.
A few simple reminders
- Keep a record of your septic system’s location and maintenance history.
- Don’t rely on septic additives or products that claim to eliminate pumping.
- Never pour paints, solvents, oils, or harsh chemicals down the drain.
- Avoid flushing wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, or other non-flushable items.
- Spread out laundry loads throughout the week instead of doing them all in one day.
- Keep vehicles, heavy equipment, and deep-rooted trees away from your drainfield.
Know the warning signs
Don’t ignore these signs that your septic system may need attention:
- Slow drains or wastewater backing up into your home
- Strong odors near the tank or drainfield
- Bright green, spongy grass over the drainfield
- Green algae growing along your shoreline near where groundwater enters the lake
